We are delighted to present 30 works from Franziska Holstein’s new 90-part series ‘Untitled (90_2026)’ for the first time in Munich. The complete series was exhibited earlier this year in the ‘Colour Crush’ exhibition at the Kunsthalle Nürnberg. In parallel, we will be showing the remaining 60 works from the series in our Berlin gallery from 11 September.
The 30 works on paper are each framed, numbered and arranged in a linear, chronological sequence within the gallery space. The individual works are coated with countless layers of acrylic paint and are created side by side and simultaneously in the studio. They are composed of varying colour and pictorial arrangements. The spectrum of each individual sheet ranges from monochrome to multicoloured, expressive and spatial, with everything relating to and reacting upon one another: Holstein focuses on the creative process behind each work and its context within the series, on the combination and variation of theoretically infinite pictorial possibilities through colour and form, which have a powerful impact both individually and as a whole.
Franziska Holstein (b. 1978) studied under Arno Rink at the Academy of Fine Arts and Book Arts in Leipzig and was a master student of Neo Rauch. In this tradition-rich environment, she has consistently forged her own path in painting right through to abstraction from the very beginning. Holstein has held solo exhibitions at, amongst others, the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig (2012), the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven (2019) and the Von der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal (2023). In 2025, Franziska Holstein was awarded the Alexej von Jawlensky Prize, which is linked to a solo exhibition at the Nassauischer Kunstverein in Wiesbaden (2027). Holstein’s works form part of numerous private and institutional collections, including the Deutsche Bundesbank Collection, Frankfurt am Main, the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Von der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal. In 2025, two large murals by the artist were permanently installed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig.
