Sigmar Polke’s “Schleifenbilder” were central works in his “Athanor” presentation at the German Pavilion in 1986, for which he won the Golden Lion at the 42nd Venice Biennale. 
In Dietmar Rübel’s lecture, the “Schleifenbilder” will be discussed with regard to the history and theory of their materiality. The use of silver and graphite dust, resin, and sepia is understood as a complex interplay of history, science, and art that demands nuanced processes of reflection.
